Hindi Script Writing: Screenplay Format & Examples

From idea to scene: a practical guide to story, scene headings, action and dialogue, with Hindi examples from Baarish Ka Vaada.

1. Hindi story vs screenplay: what changes?

Prose can describe thoughts; a screenplay describes what the camera can see and the audience can hear. Instead of “Meera is worried,” show the cracked roof and her hands applying cement. Write action in the present tense, in short paragraphs.

2. Put the conflict in one sentence

Choose a protagonist, a goal and an obstacle. A practice summary: Meera must protect her Devsar library from a proposed drain while rebuilding trust with Aarav after eight years of silence. This is a teaching summary, not an approved film logline.

3. Outline scenes and their turning points

For each scene, ask: what does the character want, what stands in the way, and what changes? The roof scene establishes Meera’s responsibility. The municipal map reveals the threat to the library. A later conversation turns Aarav’s silence into a question of accountability. Cut scenes that only repeat information.

4. Hindi screenplay format: a Baarish Ka Vaada scene draft

A heading identifies interior/exterior, location and time. INT. means interior and EXT. exterior; Hindi labels are also usable. Mark a flashback’s year. Keep action, the character cue and dialogue separate. “Day” below is a teaching choice, not a confirmed time from the story.

Teaching adaptation · Not a final shooting script

EXT. DEVSAR JAN LIBRARY ROOF — DAY (2026)

Meera applies cement to a crack in the roof. Tara asks about the ending of her rain story.

MEERA

पहले कहानी लिखो। अंत बाद में देखेंगे।

Meaning: “Write the story first. We’ll see about the ending later.” The Hindi line is verbatim; the heading and action are teaching adaptations.

5. Writing Hindi dialogue: Meera’s example

Dialogue should do more than explain events. Meera’s reply to Aarav’s map both protects the library and reveals her distrust of promises. Use concise lines that fit the character; keep parenthetical acting instructions sparse.

“तो अपना सर्वे करो। मेरी किताबों को कहीं और रखवाने का वादा मत करना।”
Meera’s exact line: “Then do your survey. Don’t promise to have my books moved elsewhere.” The threat is a proposed widened drain, not a commercial complex.

6. Check time and character continuity

The main story is in Devsar in 2026 with 2018 flashbacks. Meera is 29 and 21 respectively. Tara is a 12-year-old library reader in 2026, not Aarav’s sister. Devendra is alive only in past scenes. Track years, characters, places and props such as the brass bookmark.

7. Revising and versioning your screenplay draft

Read dialogue aloud and remove unnatural phrasing. Recheck each scene’s goal, obstacle and change. Use Unicode Hindi, consistent names and dated draft versions. Avoid unnecessary camera directions in a reading script. Word count alone cannot determine video duration; acting and pauses take time too.

Exercise: your first scene

For your original story, choose one place, two characters and one conflict. Write a heading, three visible actions and a short exchange. What changed by the end? This guide does not grant permission to use Baarish Ka Vaada’s characters or dialogue in a commercial film.
